I used the recommended command from "https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Laptop/Sony/Vaio/FSeries/Oneiric" and my touchpad is working fine now, and I no longer get the error as there is no touchpad in the gpointing-device-settings dialog

Hello, I just tried starting gpointing-device-settings and I get the same error, furthermore settings aren't saved after I modify them

I don't seem to be capable of editing my posts, if I disable or enable the touchpad it works (I assume it relies on an external command to detect it and set it to off/on) but it doesn't save other settings if you don't disable the touchpad, mainly I tried disable while any other devices are connected

I also get this error, and I'm running 12.04 as well.

The message repeats 16 times and the Gpointing Device Settings opens, when issuing the command.

Unlike Jeremy (Comment 4), I can save settings.

Only thing off for me is that the trackpad is still very fast though it's at the slowest setting. Not sure if this is related to the error or not. Also, in case this is helpful, It shows settings for Logitech USB Optical Mouse (the mouse I'm using), PS/2 Mouse, and AlpsPS/2 ALPS GlidePoint (my trackpad).

Also, I'm using a Toshiba Portege R100, in case this is helpful as well.

Ultimately, I'd like to have better control over the trackpad speed, and also have the trackpad settings tab appear in System Settings under Mouse and Touchpad, where there is only Mouse tab.

This package has been removed from the Ubuntu development release, so I am closing all remaining open bug reports.

Sorry that we couldn't fix your problem properly, but gpointing-device-settings is dead upstream, buggy and completely unmaintained.

Thank you for your understanding and please continue to report any bugs you may find.
