Settings are lost after reboot/unsuspend

Binary package hint: gpointing-device-settings

I use gpointing-device-settings to enable my external Apple Magic Trackpad and disable my internal trackpad. None of the settings are retained between reboots, although they do appear to be retained between login sessions. Examples:

I have Disable touchpad set on the internal trackpad (named 'appletouch')
On the Magic Trackpad (named 'barry's trackpad') I have Disable tapping set (under Tapping tab)

Every time I reboot, I have to set these values because they system has reset them. Logging out and logging back in appears to retain them.

Note that settings also get reset after an unsuspend.

I also find that settings are reset after suspend/resume on Oneiric.

After reboot settings are ignored
Hack:
Open settings - turn off wheel emulation
close settings
Open settings - turn on wheel emulation
Then it's working again --- until the next reboot. :(

I see slightly different behaviour. Settings reset on every log out, but not on suspend/unsuspend. And not all settings seem to reset. The only one that I notice that resets is the touchpad speed setting on the speed tab. After log in, if I tweak the speed setting a little, it kicks in immediately.

This is in 11.04, on various Thinkpads: a Thinkpad W510, Thinkpad x120e, and a Thinkpad T41. I haven't noticed this in the version of gpointing-device-settings that comes with 10.04.

I partially take that back. On the Thinkpad X120e, settings are indeed lost after suspend/unsuspend, specifically, scrolling vertically with two fingers doesn't work after resume, even though it's checked. Unchecking it, and then checking it again fixes it, but that'll get damn annoying on every unsuspend. Interesting that I don't notice this problem on the Thinkpad W510. Perhaps I tweaked some config file on that machine long ago and forgot about it.

Sorry, one more thing. Although the "enable vertical scrolling when dragging with two fingers" setting is forgotten on unsuspend on the X120e, the touchpad minimum speed setting is not. Maybe that's a hint?

In dconf-editor you can edit the settings like this:

Go to org/gnome/settings-daemon/peripherals/touchpad There you can select e.g. two finger scrolling instead of boarder scrolling, disable while typing, tap-to click and all the other nice usability-enhancing features.

This package has been removed from the Ubuntu development release, so I am closing all remaining open bug reports.

Sorry that we couldn't fix your problem properly, but gpointing-device-settings is dead upstream, buggy and completely unmaintained.
