Thank you for this bug report and the very clear directions to reproduce it. I can confirm this bug exists in Lucid Lynx using emacs23.1+1-4ubuntu5. A workaround is to exit the shell and restart it. The echo then turns off. This has been forwarded upstream by message to <email address hidden> according to the directions in emacs23 for bug reporting.
