Bug Description

Repro:

Create a new spreadsheet:

    $ gnumeric &

Type "foo" in the first cell, maximize the window, and save as /tmp/foo (so the file is /tmp/foo.gnumeric). Close and quit gnumeric.

Open the spreadsheet:

    $ gnumeric /tmp/foo.gnumeric &

It opens maximized, but not quite reaching the bottom of the display. Notably, the "Sheet 1", "Sheet 2", "Sheet 3" tabs are not visible. Unmaximizing the window reveals them, and remaximizing the window behaves correctly.

I have a dual head system (2 x 1920 x 1200) on which maximized windows occupy one head. This might be a bug in compiz, but I don't see it in other apps at the moment, so I'm reporting it for gnumeric.

"It opens maximized, but not quite reaching the bottom of the display." sounds like a window manager problem. Do you see the same problem with any other window manager?

Yes, I agree, but how do I test with a different wm without hosing my system? I'm happy to try if offered pointers.

BTW, I just reproduced on my laptop, same behavior except that ss opens full maximized, simply without having painted the bottom tabs. Demax then max doesn't change what grid cells are displayed, but does cause the sheet tabs to paint.

I don't know much about Ubuntu 12.04, but perhaps you can select a different session on login?

This appears to be a window manager bug, not a gnumeric bug, in that I've found other apps with similar behavior (losing the bottom bit of the window when opening maximized). So probably this should be reclassed as compiz.
