Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnomesword

The current Gnomesword version is 2.4.1. Several of the bugs filed in the launchpad against Gnomesword have been fixed. Why can't a new version be added to the repositories?

Could an update to Gnomesword be included in the repositories? Gnomesword on their website is up to version 2.4.1 and includes many features not included in the version 2.2.3.
Note that an update to Biblememorizer will also be needed as Biblememorizer version 0.5.2 seems to have some errors with the files included with Gnomesword 2.4.1. However, Biblememorizer version 0.6.3 seems to work OK wih Gnomesword 2.4.1.

I will try to package an update, _if_ anyone can complete it before me however feel free to try. This should be finished by Wednesday next week or even earlier if things go well.

There's currently a team forming for jointly maintaining the CrossWire
packages (e.g. sword, gnomesword, bibletime) for Ubuntu and Debian.
The current package maintainer in Debian has just created a new
mailing list and has invited everyone who is interested to join:

Note that updated packages already exist, if this helps. Dominique Corbex writes:

"I've made gnomesword-2.4.1 and sword-1.5.11 packages for Debian
Lenny/unstable and Ubuntu Hardy/intrepid. They are available for
download at the usual place:

http://dominique.corbex.net/gnomesword/

or add the relative source

For debian unstable:
deb http://dominique.corbex.net/gnomesword/debian unstable main

For ubuntu hardy:
deb http://dominique.corbex.net/gnomesword/ubuntu hardy main

For ubuntu intrepid:
deb http://dominique.corbex.net/gnomesword/ubuntu intrepid main"

I meet a problem with these repositories.

When I use the version of Gnomesword available on http://dominique.corbex.net/gnomesword/ubuntu (2.4.1 mozembed) on Ubuntu (on Intrepid Ibex or on Hardy Heron), BibleTime refuses to launch, because of the version of the package of libsword ! It's an important problem, don't you think ?
So (according to me) this bug must be fixed before adding this version 2.4.1 (on the repositories of Ubuntu Jaunty).

The error ist :
"bibletime: error while loading shared libraries: libsword.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"

Although I have install all libsword packages (thanks to : "sudo apt-get install libsword*"), it's doesn't work better.
I have made a symbolic link, the starting of bibletime is longer (I can see the logo of bibletime) but I doesn't work.

The resultat of the command :"bibletime --version" is :
"Qt: 3.3.8b
KDE: 3.5.10
BibleTime: 1.6.5.1"

And when I use Gnomesword 2.4.1 and the old version of libsword [libsword-1.5.9.8.1ubuntu1] (thanks to "Force the version" in synaptic), it's the contrary (bibletime works and not gnomesword) !

The resultat of the command :"gnomesword2" is :
"gnomesword2: error while loading shared libraries: libsword-1.5.11.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"

Indeed I have seen that the file : "/usr/lib/libsword.so.6" is absent in libsword-1.5.11.3 (version available on http://dominique...).

So what I have to do to can use GnomeSword 2.4.1 and BibleTime ?

There is currently a packaging effort underway for both GnomeSword (just recently renamed to Xiphos) and BibleTime. This will update BibleTime to use the newer sword library. As soon as the updated BibleTime is available, I will post back here (should be within a week).

Unfortunately the packaging was too difficult for me to handle but I do believe that a Debian team are working on it and their package will merge with Ubuntu soon.

They work together on Hardy/Intrepid/Jaunty !

Please don't use my ppa (~dmitrij.ledkov) cause it might be broken at times ;-)

I'm member of the pkg-crosswire Debian team. Packages are almost ready for Jaunty.

For now you can use stable team ppa:

We promise not to break this one ;-)
