screenshot tool saves files without an extension

Bug Description

if you do not append an extention, the screenshot tool wont either.

this can lead to some confusion.

it should append .png to the file if no extension is given.

also, i typed "gnome-screenshot" as the name of the package (in launchpad), but it says:

"gnome-screenshot" does not exist in Ubuntu. Please choose a different package. If you're unsure, please select "I don't know"

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. I am unable to reproduce your bug on Ubuntu 8.10 (gnome-screenshot appends .png correctly). Please indicate what version of Ubuntu you are currently using. Thank you.

thats strange. i took a screenshot when running from the live cd (of
ubuntu 8.10). it took a screenshot, and it dod not have the ".png" at
the end.

to replicate:

1. open up something
2. press "alt"+"print screen" to take a screenshot of the current window
3. the Name box will be empty. enter a name (such as "test")
4. click "save"

and it does not add the ".png"

...

thats weird, i just tried it again, and it turns out that sometimes,
it does automatically fill out the name for you. a few seconds ago,
when i tried it, the Name box was empty by default.

also, something weird happens if you try to save the screenshot
without entering a name. try it.

The name of the image is taken from the window title. I took about 15 screenshots of various windows and they all had automatically detected the name of the picture (with the .png). Can you try to determine what types of windows cause the title to be blank and without the extension? As far as your last comment, I agree, the behavior when trying to save with a blank name is very strange. Please open another bug report against gnome-utils describing the problem. Thanks!

after i read your first response, i took a screenshot of gmail in
mozilla firefox, and the "name" box was completely empty. so then,
while i was typing you that last reply, i had to refer back to the
screen where you take a screenshot, so i pressed alt+prntscrn again,
and it had the title. it was the same instance of mozilla firefox, and
the same page. the only difference is that i was typing a reply when i
attempted to take the other screenshot. the time when the box was
completely empty, i was just reading your reply.

the issue seems fixed in jaunty closing the bug, you can reopen if you still get it there though
