Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-utils

"gnome-screenshot" fails to take a screenshot of the entire desktop, it only takes screenshot from the active window (the behaviour which should only apply when using ALT+PRTSCR).
The problem is caused by the "gnome-screenshot" binary, which also takes a screenshot from the active window when run from the terminal.
I guess the binary takes the '-w' option (which alters gnome-screenshot's behaviour to take a screenshot of the active window) now is always active.

Excuse me for not being thorough enough, but yes this bug is perfectly reproducable:

Action: press ALT+PRTSCR / run "gnome-screenshot -w" from the terminal
Result: a screenshot is taken from the active window (as desirable)

Action: press PRTSCR / run "gnome-screenshot" from the terminal
Result: a screenshot is taken from the active window (NOT desirable)

Excuse me for the mail spam (I hope your e-mail client groups messages ;) ), but the command of the previous strace log was obviously "gnome-screenshot -w"

Included is the strace log of "gnome-screenshot", which does not work correctly

that works fine for me, gnome-screenshot takes a screenshot from the whole desktop and with the -w flag it takes a window one, not confirming, are you using compiz? is this reproducible with a new user created on your system? which video card do you have and which driver are you using?

I can confirm this error. Using a up to date Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex here with all the latest updates installed. When i hit "Print" a screenshot of the current window is made. "Alt+Print" does the same. A screenshot of the whole desktop os not possible

Strangely, this bug seems to have disappeared for me. As it certainly was present though I am using also gnome-utils 2.24.0.0-ubuntu1, I'd think this bug is triggered by some other package.

If invoked with the --interactive option (or from the menus), gnome-screenshot can be set to grab the whole desktop. After that, the keyboard shortcut to grab the desktop works, but only until the shortcut to grab the window is invoked. At that point gnome-screenshot reverts to grabbing windows only.

The key /apps/gnome-screenshot/take_window_shot gets set when gnome-screensaver is invoked with --window, but remains set afterwards and is apparently consulted even if no --window is passed in subsequent invocations.
