Bug Description

Package: gnome-utils
Version: 2.11.1-0ubuntu1

There are several problems with gnome-system-log.

I start gnome-system-log from Applications|System Tools|System Log.
The latest entries of /var/log/syslog are displayed. However, no new
entries are displayed as they are added.

I click on Log|Monitor and then "Monitor" has a check beside it.
The latest entries of /var/log/syslog are displayed. New entries are
displayed as they are added.

Thus the first issue is that the default mode should be Monitor=on.

Next I click on /var/log/mail.log. It displays the _earliest_
logged entries, not the latest ones. That is the second issue.

I click on /var/log/syslog. It no longer displays new entries as
they are added, even though there is still a checkmark beside
"Monitor" on the "Log" dropdown menu.

I tried this program about a year ago in Debian and had the same
sorts of problems with it. Since the program is hardly usable I
returned to using "tail --follow=name /var/log/syslog" in a
terminal window. I thought Ubuntu might have fixed the program,
but it seems not.

About the second issue that works fine. It lists the entries by date and scroll
down to the current entry/select it by default. What is wrong about this?

When the program starts it displays the most recent entries from syslog;
i.e. the entries from now, today, 11 July. When I select mail.log it
displays entries from 5 July. It would be preferable if every view
had the same default, viz., that of showing the most recent entries.

it works fine here, all the logs have the current entry selected. What locale do
you use

Checking again, I see that 12 July _is_ displayed in the right pane.
However, 5 July is highlighted in the calendar at the bottom left.
This is what led me to believe that I was looking at entries from
5 July.

Do:

    Start System Log Viewer
    Click on "/var/log/syslog"
    Select Log|Monitor
    Click on "/var/log/mail.log"
    Click on "/var/log/syslog"

The log listing is no longer updated.

This is with today's Breezy.
