Binary package hint: gnome-utils

gnome-system-log should be able to read compressed .gz log files.

May be an ugly fix but:
gconf-editor
apps>gnome-system-log>logfiles
add /var/log/auth.log.0, etc ...
it works for SOME gz logs and not others (syslog for instance, I can read .1.gz but not before, others I can)
