Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-themes-ubuntu

This is not very important, but if the artwork people (who do a great job) can fix this easily, maybe it should be fixed.

In some situations, the background image of the gnome-panel will be repeated. In the attached screenshot I have a panel on the left side. Ok, nobody would do this. The problem is also visible when I open the drop-down menu of tomboy. It has the black gray/background of the panel and it is long enough to exhibit the "problem".

Not true! I always use a vertical panel on the left side. On a small screen the additional 24pixels if height is much appreciated.

The New Wave theme is beautiful. It would be great if this glitch could be fixed for Jaunty

This issue is fixed for the horizontal panels but it could not be fixed for the vertical ones because the theming system does not allow us to skin horizontal and vertical panels differently.

Oh, I just noticed that you use the pixmap engine. We would need an engine that supports gradients. Then the gradients would be scaled to the size of the area being filled. Is it possible within the policy of the New Wave theme to use another gtk-engine?

It would be possible if the engine could achieve the same results as the pixmap one. I don't know an engine that could do gradients in the panel though.

Should this then be considered a deficiency or bug in the pixmap engine?

I think that it is both :)

I've done some digging, but haven't been able to make a whole lot of
headway. I tried creating a new pixbuf engine section in the gtkrc
file for the panel, but it doesn't seem like any of the possible
function= values have any effect on the panel as a whole. I looked at
the code, and found where gtkrc is parsed, but wasn't able to easily
see where the data is actually applied. Do you know if this is this
something missing from libgtk+? Or does gnome-panel need to be
changed to coincide with one of the function definitions? FLAT_BOX
has some effect, but only on the panel widgets, not the panel as a
whole.

Well the thing is that the panel cannot be themed via the image {...} functions but only by the bg_pixmap[NORMAL] and so on variables. That is a know problem for this engine and if somebody could write image {...} functions for the panel that would be great. Still notice that Gnome 3 is coming shortly and that should fix all problem with panels as in the new Desktop it has been totally rewritten and presents different functionality. I'm not sure if it is themeble by that time but it sure will be in the near future.

The orange selection gradient is also too short. In lists with thick items, like the Firefox addon window, the orange select gradient repeats in a similar way.

I have special theme for Firefox only that fixes some things but as general I have given upon fixing Firefox because of their strange implementations that do not follow the GTK theming rules.
