GNOME Terminal window initially opens at 80x23

In Ubuntu 11.04 beta 1, when I launch GNOME Terminal from Alt-F2, the dash, or from a pinned launcher, the initial terminal window is 80x23. Any additional terminals launched from the launcher or the GNOME Terminal menu are 80x24 as per the default setting.

When I pin the terminal application to the launcher, and launch it, it doesn't get an arrow indicating the application is active. When I click the launcher again, it opens a new terminal window instead of showing the current active one, or triggering expose.

The only way to get back to the other terminal application is to minimize windows on top, or using Alt-Tab.

Does this behaviour corresponds with what you are describing here, Nathan?

Verified. This bug still exists in 11.04.

Might be related to handling of the menu (which would occupy one row).
Please note that it appears to be buggy in some regards, so it might even consume one row although it's not being displayed. See also bug 863309.

JFI: you can check this using:
  % echo $COLUMNS x $LINES
  80 x 22

Enabling/disabling the menu bar changes the $LINES. Everytime I toggle the bar on and off, I get one line less, currently 18 only.

It appears to me that gnome-terminal is trying to maintain the size of the window, no matter the number of lines within the terminal or how many lines the menu bar removes from the terminal. When the window first opens, it looks like it's 80x24, but then the menu bar appears and knocks off 1 or 2 lines.
