I just tested a fresh install of 10.04 with version 2.29.6 of gnome-terminal and this was not an issue.

Changed in gnome-terminal (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → Low
status: New → Confirmed

There is an additional item in gconf-editor that must be used to get the custom size:

apps | gnome-terminal | profiles | Default

use_custom_default_size

Due to this being a minor bug that does not affect the use of Terminal there will not be a backport to 10.04

Please see this link for more information on why this will not be backported to 10.04
