Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

this is what the manpage says about role

       --role=ROLE
                 Set the role for the last-specified window; applies to only
                 one window; can be specified once for each window you create
                 from the command line.

this explanation is useless. it does not explain what roles are available or what the effect of a role is.

using ubuntu lucid

gnome-terminal Version: 2.29.6-0ubuntu5

same line on Maverick , confirming that might be a debian issue as well.

Changed in gnome-terminal (Ubuntu):

I emailed the listed author in the man page saying roughly the same thing. Hoping to get a response back. If and/or when I do I will paste the response here. Googling for the usage is not bearing a great many useful results other than online man pages.
