Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

Support for the SFTP protocol is missing on the Gnome Terminal.

HTTP, FTP and other protocols work just fine.

SFTP support is the reason I find myself using Konsole on a Gnome environment everyday at work.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem. We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the appropriate application's "Help -> Report a Problem" menu or using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Oh, I deal with bug reports daily, as I am a professional developer, and I can assure you, given common familiarity with the application, my description would've been quite enough.

However, let me make things clearer;
1) Open the Gnome Terminal; the default terminal emulation application in Ubuntu.
2) Type "echo http://bugs.launchpad.net". Hit "enter".
3) Right-click on the link, select "open link".

See how that works?

OK, now try this;
1) Once on the Gnome Terminal, type "echo sftp://some.server.with/files/in/it"
2) Place the pointer on top of the address - notice how the link's protocol is not entirely underlined; the terminal mistakes an SFTP link for an FTP one.

Please let me know if this is still not clear enough.

this is fixed on gnome-terminal 2.30 with the following commit: http://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-terminal/commit/?id=6a6c1f044cf438970fbe23f5b2d927926a6900af ; the bug it's going to be fixed on lucid with the inclusion of 2.30 version of the package as soon as it's accepted there, bug for that is bug 553080

Thank you very, very much for that information.

I'm really glad I'll finally be able to use the native terminal emulator again =)

This is actually fixed, shouldn't it have been closed by now?
