Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

The default color palette used by gnome-terminal is "Tango" which maps the "black" color of ncurses to a dark grey (not black) this makes using ncurse programs (like emacs, aptitude...) much difficult since it reduces contrast.

You could either change the default theme to Linux console or just change this black->grey to black->black

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: amd64
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.04
Package: gnome-terminal 2.26.0-0ubuntu2
ProcEnviron:
 PATH=(custom, user)
 LANG=en_CA.UTF-8
 SHELL=/bin/bash
SourcePackage: gnome-terminal
Uname: Linux 2.6.28-11-generic x86_64

That's an upstream decision, feel free to open a bug on bugzilla.gnome.org about it, that's not an ubuntu task, closing this as wontfix.

another person not happy about this. black is black. It makes mutt very hard to read.

If upstream make a stupid decision does that always get marked as "wontfix upstream"?

I'll raise it upstream as they may not be aware of the issues this causes.

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=356389 is the culprit for causing it. I'll add detail of the bug I raise once I get a gnome account.

Francois - you can fortunately change this easily in the gnome-terminal prefernces (top left colour needs changing to black).

I've never seen this fixed, and it still happens in lucid. Fullscreen programs such as aptitude still get that washed-out look.

Additional note here:

It appears that for all the actual predefined colour schemes, black is black.

Black isn't black however for the default colour scheme set up when a new user account is created.

To observe, remove ~/.gconf/apps/gnome-terminal, log out and in again.
