Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

vinny@Shadowcat-XPS:~$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 8.04.1
Release: 8.04

(I am running x64)

vinny@Shadowcat-XPS:~$ apt-cache policy gnome-terminal
gnome-terminal:
  Installed: 2.22.1-0ubuntu2
  Candidate: 2.22.1-0ubuntu2
  Version table:
 *** 2.22.1-0ubuntu2 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com hardy/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Sometimes when I change the directory in a terminal, list the contents, switch to another directory, then try to list its contents, it will not show output immediately, but rather show the command I entered with a blinking cursor in the first character and a solid cursor at the end. Then I have to either wait for the output to show up after 3-5 seconds or just switch windows or enter another command.

I can reproduce this bug consistently by running the following commands, though I cannot figure out the pattern of when this is occurring.

cd /usr/share
ls
cd /usr/local
ls

I attached an image file of the bug.

Interesting... it only seems to happen when Nvidia powermizer is on Performance Level 0. The commands work fine when it's on Level 2!

I am running a newer driver:
The currently installed driver is: 'NVIDIA Accelerated Graphics Driver for
Linux-x86_64' (version: 177.67).

Maybe I'll try rolling back and see if I can still reproduce this bug. Sorry, I didn't notice this until right after I posted.

thanks for the report, not happening here, could you test the same with terminator (the terminal emulator) or xterm? thanks.

I don't get this same problem in xterm or terminator. I am starting to believe that it is related to my nvidia driver, but I am perplexed as to why it happens in gnome-terminal only.

It doesn't only happen with cd and ls, sometimes it will happen on other commands. This is just how I can reproduce it consistently (as long as Performance Level is on 0)

I took a video and uploaded it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7f7fySzFUPE

I hit enter at 0:07, showing the bug. This happens again at 0:21.

Then I show the Performance Level's affect on the bug: I switch workspaces a few times to get the level to 2, then try to reproduce the bug and fail. The level drops to 1 at 1:12. I still cannot reproduce the bug. The Performance Level drops to 0 at 1:24, and I reproduce the bug at 1:32.

This is on Nvidia 8400M GS driver 177.67 --- If people cannot report this bug for a supported driver I will have to take it up with nvidia.

I updated my driver to 177.78 beta and I still have this issue.

Funny, I don't have this problem in Intrepid.

Closing it as you said you don't have this issue with Intrepid. thanks.
