Test case that demonstrates the issue: really/ really/ really/ loooonnnnnnnnnn nnnnnnnnnnggggg ggggggggggggggg /directory/ really/ really/ really/ loooonnnnnnnnnn nnnnnnnnnnggggg ggggggggggggggg /directory/ foo
$ mkdir -p ~/really/
$ touch ~/really/
$ ls
...
the terminal shrinks and goes into a loop and is unusable
