Bug Description

The "transparent background" option of the gnome terminal is not working properly, the screen background turns black instead of transparent when a solid color is used as backgoround and if an image is being used it will only be visible when the bar is set to none, otherwise it will return to the last solid color selected. I'll attach scrrens on both cases.

In Terminal if you select Help and About you will see Transpancy working as expected. Close the About dialogue box and transparency fade back to solid black.

I have the same problem.

I read that the developers had removed transparency, but I imagine ubuntu team search a workaround to see transparency on terminal.
When I select about from the menú help I will see transparency. It's strange.
I hope to solve this problem, becouse I working with transparency.

There's a simple patch to re-enable transparency here: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=695371

I've set up a PPA with transparent gnome-terminal here: https://launchpad.net/~towolf/+archive/transparent-gnome-terminal

It's possible that gnome-terminal 3.14 might get the translucent background feature back:

Tobias: That PPA sadly requires GnomeShell 3.12 actually, it won't work with vanilla installation.

Bug not properly fixed

Running ubuntu gnome (15.04 & up to date)
using numix gnome theme and enabled dark theme in prferences.

The transparency is not active.

However for the current terminal window it can be acticated, if I
1) profile preferences -> colors -> move from none to full back and forth
2) then profile preferences -> general enable and disable custom font

bug still occurs on gnome 3.16 w/ gnome-terminal 3.16
transparency can be enabled by editing the profile preferences and changing the slider a bit
my preferred fix is ... use Konsole :)

My Gnome terminal also has a solid background on launch, and only by either tweaking settings or using the Help -> About workaround will bring the transparency back. Has been driving me crazy for a few releases now. :(
