Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-system-tools

The advanced option rightly allows to set G/UIDs below the standard rage (i.e. within the range of dynamically allocated system users, in debian: 100-999 created by "adduser --system")

But since the option to show those dynamically manageable users (100-999 in debian/ubuntu case) is missing the users dissappear once the ID is changed into that range.

Confirmed, but there's a GConf option to show system users, and a GUI to define UID range to show, but which is disabled (presumably not completely working).

Feel free to provide a patch to make it alive again.

(Anyway, I think people that tweak UIDs know what's going on, so they'll be able to use command-line tools of they need them, whcih mitigates the impact of this bug.)

summary: - [users-admin] advanced option can not show system IDs
+ [users-admin] No option to show system users
Changed in gnome-system-tools (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → Wishlist
status: New → Triaged

OK, hopefully system users can be shown for anybody to see in a next version.

What do you mean? System users have to stay hidden by default.

Feel free to provide a patch, but it would have to be in line with the cleaned UI. I don't really see the benefit, though: what on earth would you want to do with a list cluttered with tens of system users? Change their names? Their UIDs? That's a rare operation, and it's performed better using the command line.
