Bug Description

Here is my /etc/hosts:

127.0.0.1 localhost
10.0.0.10 neon.atom neon
10.0.0.6 carbon.atom carbon
10.0.0.30 zinc.atom zinc
10.0.0.85 astatine.atom astatine
10.0.0.78 platinum.atom platinum
10.0.0.90 thorium.atom thorium

# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
fe00::0 ip6-localnet
ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
ff02::3 ip6-allhosts

Now when I add a machine (10.0.0.98 test.atom test) to this it reads:

127.0.0.1 localhost
10.0.0.10 neon.atom neon
10.0.0.6 carbon.atom carbon
10.0.0.30 zinc.atom zinc
10.0.0.85 astatine.atom astatine
10.0.0.78 platinum.atom platinum
10.0.0.90 thorium.atom thorium.atom

# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
fe00::0 ip6-localnet
ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
ff02::3 ip6-allhosts
10.0.0.98 test.atom test

Please notice that the line 10.0.0.90 thorium.atom thorium has been changed to 10.0.0.90 thorium.atom thorium.atom

To correct this this I have to edit /etc/hosts using gedit.

Since it has been a long time from the last comment:

Does this problem still exist in Gutsy (7.10) or Hardy (8.04)?

Thanks!

Hey,
I have this problem too.
I went into System > Administration > Network to change some settings and it changed my hostname in /etc/hosts from ubuntu to ubuntu.MSHOME.
MSHOME is the network I'm on.
It makes sudo and gksu stop working and the only way I can fix it is by restarting the comp and going to root shell and editing /etc/hosts manually.

I just wanted to note that I had this problem with all 5 of my upgrades as well as my fresh install of 8.04. I really wish I had found this long ago or else I wouldn't have needed a fresh install. In fact, when you try upgrading 5 systems from 7.10 to 8.04 and they ALL stop working, you lose a large amount of faith in a distro. I was about ready to dump ubuntu and if this doesn't get fixed soon I will no longer advise using ubuntu, as it is not stable enough to use rom upgrade o upgrade and I can no have my clients and family using a distro that can't even handle a simple upgrade. This issue is still occuring with the steps above and if you actually use a fully qualified name in 7.10 to 8.04 the upgrade appears to not work since NO ADMINISTRATIVE tasks will run after this occurs. It's sad to see no one seems to feel this bug is even worth considering, as the importance is still undecided.

Just did a fresh install of 8.04, setup my network and now I can't use sudo. This seems like a pretty major bug to me!
