Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-system-tools

2.18.1-0ubuntu1 (feisty)

after adding a user and modifying group relations, the users-admin didnt start again (without reboot)
trying to figure out what happend i tried to sudo to root, and it sayed your not allowed !

After rebooting with a knoppix cd, i figured out /etc/group was emptied (groupnames in there as in gshadow, but no users that belong to any group!)
To workaround, i inserted myself into group admin again, rebooted, and then used the users-admin to add the three users which are using the system in the regual groups feistys users-admin permission tab gives me.

I think there were other (system) users (like lp) that did belong to a group, but i no longer have the possibility to check how it was before, because group- is just one step back, and there were already all group relations gone.

Personal Question: how should a clean group file look like, or where do i get one, to reintegrate systemuser to systemgroups relations ?

Thank you for your bug. Do you have steps to trigger the bug? You can look at default group file using a desktop CD

This sounds like #26338 and duplicates.
The graphical users-admin reliably strips information from unrelated users in /etc/group.
Let's take further discussion there.
