Thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu.9.10 reached EOL on April 30, 2011.
Please see this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

I've tried recreating this bug with Oneiric with System Monitor 3.2.1 and was unable to, given the information you've provided. Please either a) upgrade and test or b) increase the verbosity of the steps to recreate it so we can try again.

Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

At the time I reported this I had this VL420 in use. But later I upgraded it to Maverick and gave it away to my net-door neighbour...:-) The machine still works okay but I have no ability to recreate the bug, so if I am the only one who reported this, maybe we regard this as a one time issue. On my currently used Lucid 10.04.3 I do not have the issue.
Regards,
Peter
