This has been fixed upstream, in System Monitor 3.10.0, released in 2013, but the fix didn't make it into Trusty, being an LTS release, and the System Monitor 3.10 release having some UI changes (including a headerbar) which have been rejected for inclusion to have a stable application set in the LTS.
It's not clear yet whether Ubuntu will accept apps with headerbar for Utopic. Based on an IRC discussion, developers are working on better experience and integration between headerbars and Unity, so it might happen.
