Trusty Syslog viewer states syslog file is not a normal file or is not a text file

Bug Description

While opening syslog, I get this message. gksudo gnome-system-log get it also.
I can open syslog.1 and all syslog.*.gz
I am in sudo and adm groups.
All files listed above are -rw-r----- 1 syslog adm when listed with
ls -l sysl*
