Exact same problem here, with ods files (did not try odt).

Before freezing a notification appears : "Additional packages requested". And UI freeze, ctrl + Alt + F2 or other keyboard shortcuts are not helpful.

Ubuntu 17.10, happens on Wayland AND Xorg.

Hi, I had exact the same problem and solved it by installing the unoconv converter (apt install unoconv).
Hope that helps, cheers

I had the same problem in Ubuntu 18.04.1 with latest Updates to now, Gnome 3.28.2, 64 Bit System.

Problem:
Preview of ODT-File lets freeze the whole desktop suddenly (suddenly fan begins to rotate hearable), but nothing works (at least with Ctrl+Alt+F3 I could switch to console and after login as user (no sudo!) I could reboot without problems).

Solution:
I searched for a possible solution. Then I read #4 ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-sushi/+bug/1739893/comments/4 ) of "Daniel (2-ubuntuone-4)" and tried his suggustion to install unoconv. Now I am able to preview ODT-files without freezing the X-Server.

last but not least: Thank you!

I had the same problem on Ubuntu LTS 18.04, desktop freeze and had to either do REISUB or Ctrl+alt+F2 to switch to a terminal and reboot the machine (restarting gnome service didn't work for me).

Now works to preview also excel files. Related bug on Gnome's site: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/sushi/-/issues/26

Seems there could be an issue with m4a files too https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/sushi/-/issues/25

Ubuntu GNOME 17.10 and 18.04 LTS are no longer supported. I am unable to duplicate this issue with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS or 22.04 LTS.

Are you still experiencing this issue?

installed: Ubuntu 22.04.1 with all updates until now; gnome-sushi 42.0-0ubuntu1

First it seemed to show the content of an ods-file. Somehow a crash report tool appeared reporting about gij or gis or similar (error type: a segfault). I would write more details if I know how to get the informations from bug report tool after sending. This happened with my test about 3 to 4 times. Now nothing happens when pressing on space bar (eventually because I tried it with another ods-file).

Now I restarted to test it. With an ODS-File no crash happens, but no preview is shown. With an ODT-File a preview is shown. After second time space bar preview is closed as expected. I do not no exactly when crash report of gij-console comes but when (if during or after closing preview) I switch tasks, suddenly I find a crash report applet with title "Sorry, Ubuntu 22.04 has experienced an internal error.". Affected is /usr/bin/gjy-console, package gjs 1.72.2-0uuntu1, ProblemType Crash, crashed with SIGSEGV, ApportVersion 2.20.11-0ubuntu82.2, architecture amd64, Date Wed Dec 7 11:33:52 2022 ... I hope. report can be found easily.

Ubuntu 22.04 was a clean install some months ago on a Lenovo Thinkpad T580. The only bit special configuration was changing Firefox Snap Package to a Debian Package (else KeepassXC could not communicate with the browser). For 3D Development I have the given proprietary Nvidia Driver installed and OpenSource Development Tools like G++, OpenGL and some other libraries like Eigens installed ... thus nothing really special I think.
