Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-games

The gnome-suduko program used to have an option to generate additional puzzles. But in 10.10 it is missing. If you run it from the command line instead of the GUI, you'll see an error message like the following:

WARNING: Not able to provide 1 puzzles in levels ['very hard']
WARNING: Generate more puzzles if you really need this many puzzles!
WARNING: Repeating puzzle for difficulty very hard -- generate more puzzles to avoid this.

Thanks for the report, it has been some time without any response or feedback in this bug report and we are wondering if this is still an issue for you with the latest release of Ubuntu the Natty Narwhal, May you please test with that version and comment back if you're still having or not the issue? Please have a look at http://www.ubuntu.com/download to know how to install that version. Thanks in advance and sorry for the late response.

This has been fixed in the latest development release, Ubuntu Oneric to be released in October. Now sudoku generates puzzles automatically in the background.

How can I obtain a copy of gnome-sudoku with this fix which jbicha states has been released? It certainly does not seem to be present in my installation of Ubuntu 11.10 (which has been kept fully up to date). The game does produce a new puzzle to play online, but it does not produce multiple new games so that the option "Print Multiple Sudokus" can be used. Without this ability to produce multiple new puzzles, the game is virtually useless to the person who wants to work offline. I am still getting exactly the same behaviour as did the original poster.

Dr. Hanna, in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, you can click Game>Print Multiple Sudokus. I don't know about Ubuntu 11.10 but I do highly recommend you upgrade to 12.04 LTS soon.

Jeremy, the menu option "Print multiple sudokus" is present in Ubuntu 11.10. What I was trying to say is that, after it has been used a certain number of times, it ceases to work any more because there are no more puzzles in store. There is no option to "generate new puzzles", so this store can never be replenished. It may produce new puzzles in the background, but, if I am right, it is only doing this one at a time, so that there is never more than one new puzzle (of a particular type, such as hard, very hard, etc.). This means that the menu item "Print multiple sudokus" cannot be used. I don't know whether switching to 12.04 would help this.

Dr. Hanna, could you open a new bug for that issue?

Jeremy, I could certainly open a new bug report. However, I cannot understand why this should be necessary, since I am experiencing exactly the same behaviour in Ubuntu 11.10 that the original poster seems to have been having in 10.10. When I run gnome sudoku from the command line instead of from the GUI, I get exactly the same error messages - something like:

WARNING: Not able to provide 1 puzzles in levels ['very hard']
WARNING: Generate more puzzles if you really need this many puzzles!
WARNING: Repeating puzzle for difficulty very hard -- generate more puzzles to avoid this.

It seems to me, therefore, that this is the same bug.

The advice to upgrade to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS does not solve the problem. I am now on a new computer with a new clean install of Ubuntu 12.04 and find that the bug is still there. Gnome soduko does not generate any new puzzles, so, after a time, the option to "Print multiple sudokus" does not work!. Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

I don't think that this has anything to do with which version of ubuntu one is using.
I have a different take on Jeremy Bicha's comment 3 above: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=704300, and the related printing problem seems to be reported here: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=580055.

It happens in ArchLinux as well, so I am sure it has nothing to do with the Ubuntu version...

In 3.14, new puzzles will be generated on the fly each time you start a new game or use Print Multiple Sudokus. You might have to wait a few seconds if you're printing lots of puzzles at once, but at least you won't get repeats anymore. :)

This should be fixed in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

Unfortunately, the changes look like they are not minimal enough to be backported to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS or 14.04 LTS according to Ubuntu's Stable Release Updates policy.
