Reinstalled ubuntu-desktop package through Synaptic. Missing global and in-app menus in some applications (i.e. terminal, video, GIMP - but some like Synaptic, Firefox are unaffected) are restored after logging off and logging back in. If I reboot, menus are missing again.

Found the following CLI commands on an Internet blog with a similar issue. The missing menus are restored and they survive rebooting. However, make certain that any unsaved data in open desktop applications (Libreoffice, gedit, etc.) are saved prior to executing as this process can close active applications running without warning.:

     dconf reset -f /org/compiz
     setsid unity

After three reboots, all seems to be functioning normally just as it was prior to receiving the Software Updater updates that corrupted the menu settings.
