Bug Description

When attaching a second screen display to my laptop when I get to my office in the morning, Nautilus attempts to span both displays, but the Nautilus desktop only spans one display.

I've attached a screenshot showing both the effect, and my display-configuration dialog box.

Workaround:
   killall nautilus
Immediately after I attach my secondary desktop, then open a Nautilus window from the "Activities" screen.

I just wanted to wake up this bug. Here's a screenshot taken this morning from a fairly up-to-date Precise laptop.

After a recent update, Nautilus now behaves properly if I killall nautilus and then restart it, after pugging in the external monitor. If I have Nautilus running and I plug in the monitor, it still behaves as showin the screenshots that I provided.

It's good progress, but I still want to keep the bug alive.

seems like a gnome-shell issue since the shell panel is misplaced as well

affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) → gnome-shell (Ubuntu)

Bug 964796 is almost certainly related, but it's not identical. For instance, I haven't seen the problem fix itself after several seconds.

Marking it as a duplicate strikes makes sense to me, since the fix is almost certainly in the same part of the code, but the behavior is subtly different.

Hmm, I haven't heard any reports of this since the gnome-shell/mutter fixes back in April. What graphics driver are you using?

You may want to report this to the GNOME developers. Basic instructions for doing so can be found at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME.

xorg is using the following driver:

I'll report this upstream when I get a chance. (My day-job has been keeping me pretty busy.)

This bug affects me in a similar way. Similar because plugging in works fine (the desktop on both screens works as expected).
But as soon as i disconnect the second monitor, all shifts to the left, causing the desktop on the internal screen to (nearly) move out of the visible area.

The attached screenshot has been taken on an up-to-date setup of precise.
