Shouldn't be too hard, as the upstream gnome-shell git repo contains a gnome-shell.desktop file that could be just installed to /usr/share/xsessions. AFAICT though, lp:ubuntu/gnome-shell does not contain this file. Is this because it is not in the upstream tarball, or is there another reason?

upstream said they don't want a gdm entry for now because gnome-shell is not ready for normal use but should just be used for testing

I think you should have a gdm entry, what upstream are saying does not make sense. Some users like running beta software. It should not be made dificult just because its in beta.

Resolved in oneiric. The "GNOME" session launches gnome-shell.
