Bug Description

On Ubuntu 24.04 (GNOME Shell 46) with Intel integrated graphics, the system works normally after login.
However, when I lock the screen using Super + L, leave the laptop idle for some time, and then return to unlock it, after entering the correct password the screen becomes completely black with only a visible crosshair mouse cursor.
The system is still running (keyboard and mouse respond), but the desktop never appears.
This issue happens every time after locking the screen for a while and can only be recovered by rebooting.
This does not occur immediately after login sometime happen but most probabaly not, only after using the lock screen every time happpen.

Thanks for the bug report. I can think of several things that might be causing this.

First we need to rule out buggy extensions so please delete all local extensions:

  cd ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/
  rm -rf extensions

and then log in again.

If the problem persists then next please try disabling the magnifier and thus the crosshairs before locking the screen.

If the problem still persists after that then next time it happens please:

1. Reboot immediately.
2. Run: journalctl -b-1 > prevboot.txt
3. Attach the resulting text file here.

Changed in gnome-shell (Ubuntu):
status: New → Incomplete

I believe the "corsshairs" might be the Xorg 'x' cursor.

If "crosshair" does mean the X cursor then gnome-shell has crashed so please follow these steps:

1. Run these commands:
     journalctl -b0 > journal.txt
     journalctl -b-1 > prevjournal.txt
and attach the resulting text files here.

2. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
       ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

3. If step 2 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine. Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please send the links to us.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security risk for yourself.
