In Ubuntu 22.04, the "Show Applications" icon at the bottom of the launcher gives the apps in undesired order.

This needs to be sorted in ascending order.

Sorry for the delay in seeing your bug report Peter.

I'm moving this to 'gnome-shell' and confirming as some sort of order is required. There might already be an existing report in Ubuntu or upstream which has requested this though. I'll see what I can find.

affects: gedit (Ubuntu) → gnome-shell (Ubuntu)
Changed in gnome-shell (Ubuntu):
status: New → Confirmed
summary: - Show Applications sort order
+ Show applications in alphabetical order

Automatically sorting icons would only make sense at install time. Thereafter we have to assume the user has dragged and reordered them manually, so automatic sorting should not be used.

I have never reordered anything manually. Lots of software has been installed.

Every time I want to find something, I must navigate the entire list. Very unproductive.

Default behaviour should be sorted ascending.

Offer an option to turn that default off if you sort and group manually.

There are at least three faster alternatives:

 - Right click on app icons and select 'Add to Favorites' to make them permanent in the dock/dash.

 - Drag and drop your most frequently used app icons to the first page.

 - Type part of the name of the app you want in Search.

If for some reason none of those are convenient then your original request is also being tracked in https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/issues/4684
