Bug Description

Ubuntu 17.10.1 boots into a black screen with no display, when switching into "EFI VGA" during boot up.

Modifying the boot menu to run in "text" mode, shows the last line as below, before losing all monitor output:

"Switching to EFI VGA"

The 15m DisplayPort cable shouldn't be a problem, but using a DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter and a 1m DVI cable works

The NonfreeKernelModules information would be incorrect, since I installed the nvidia proprietary drivers.

But it was using nouveau when it was freshly installed.

OK. Are you saying the bug only happened when using the default 'nouveau' driver?

@Daniel van Vugt

Yeah, when it was a fresh install. The grub boot loader displayed, and once it started booting into Ubuntu, the last line (in 'text' mode) was saying "changing into EFI VGA"; after that there were no monitor output, as if it were connected, but just a black display; and unlike a poorly configured X.conf, it was just black. No cursor, no switch to terminal (CTRL+ALT+F1)

I installed on a DisplayPort-to-Dvi monitor with a 1m cable, and then after the install finished and rebooted, I switched it back to DisplayPort connected to the LG 34" over a 15m cable.

My screen was all flickering, pixelated line distortions flicker across the screen. It stopped after installing nvidia drivers

Thanks. Problems specific to nouveau like this are either going to be in the mesa package, or the kernel. Maybe 'mutter' but that's less likely.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.15 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

It would be best in the Ubuntu installer image. Is there a way get an ISO build with 4.15?
