Bug Description

The Ubuntu Error Tracker has been receiving reports about a problem regarding gnome-shell. This problem was most recently seen with package version 3.26.2-0ubuntu1, the problem page at https://errors.ubuntu.com/problem/8ef857b2fe07d60742cd02d7d8f988f78ecd0f95 contains more details, including versions of packages affected, stacktrace or traceback, and individual crash reports.
If you do not have access to the Ubuntu Error Tracker and are a software developer, you can request it at http://forms.canonical.com/reports/.

I don't think we'll be able to close this bug any time soon because any error message logged directly from JavaScript will have the same stack trace.

To move forward we should create separate bugs for each error message causing these crash reports, and fix them separately. If you have such a repeatable crash then please open a new bug in this way by running:

  ubuntu-bug gnome-shell

and putting the relevant log message in the bug title.

yeah, ubuntu-bug would at least upload the ShellJournal file which hopefully contains the JS trace (as we've enabled it by default in ubuntu)

these two crashes seem to be this bug. this is a recurring (but not easily reproducible) problem for me, most often triggered by typing into the File > Open dialog in various applications (typing in order to navigate to a file path, often starting with / or .)
