Bug Description

Hi,

I'm using the latest Ubuntu Gnome 17.04 development version and I've noticed that every 20 minutes, not matter what I do, my gnome-shell restarts because of segfault.

In the Logs app I have found something like that:

21:16:35 kernel: gnome-shell[21368]: segfault at 58000321 ip 0000000058000321 sp 00007ffc334e8108 error 14 in gnome-shell[55ead3143000+4000]
20:56:33 kernel: gnome-shell[20932]: segfault at 3200000008 ip 00007f55ad542632 sp 00007ffc7abbce40 error 4 in libmozjs-38.so.0.0.0[7f55ad169000+6c7000]
20:36:32 kernel: gnome-shell[18956]: segfault at 7ffc00000008 ip 00007ff49fe01632 sp 00007ffcfb95b670 error 4 in libmozjs-38.so.0.0.0[7ff49fa28000+6c7000]
20:16:31 kernel: gnome-shell[18265]: segfault at 58000321 ip 0000000058000321 sp 00007ffe24bc5a18 error 14 in gnome-shell[56478bbb0000+4000]

I'll be happy to provide any more information, just write me what is needed.

Well... I just realized the problem concerns my Backslide extension, that switches my desktop wallpaper every 20 minutes. I'll investigate the problem and probably talk with author of the extension.

It seems that various extensions can cause the problem. It would be great if there were some way for extensions to not be able to crash gnome-shell.

Mike, because of how GNOME Shell extensions work, your suggestion is unfortunately not possible.

There was a major fix for libgweather released to Ubuntu 17.04 recently so make sure you have all updates installed. Since 17.04 was released, there were also fixes in gjs for some gnome-shell crash bugs.
