middle-clicking message tray icon causes keyboard and mouse input blockage

If I middle-click on an icon in the gnome-shell message tray, I am no longer able to interact with any open applications until I restart the shell. If I run "xdotool key XF86LogGrabInfo" in SSH, X reports in /var/log/Xorg.0.log that gnome-shell is holding input grabs:

It appears as though this may have already been reported and fixed upstream, but it does not appear to have been backported to 3.8.x: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=700854
