yes, I was using a wired connection, I've also tested with a wireless connection but I had to activate it form a terminal.
After typing 'sudo ifconfig wlan0 up' the network status indicator shows up normally.

Right, so this was by design in 3.10 (wired connections don't show an icon), it has been brought back in 3.12 however.

It might be possible to backport this change.
