Bug Description

Running Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal (beta) with gnome-shell 3.5.4-0ubuntu2 and want to upgrade to 3.5.91-0ubuntu1.

But it depends on gdm and xserver-xephyr which I felt was kinda strange.

Should it really depend on gdm and xserver-xephyr?
Does it really need to?
Why? Is it a bug?

Yes, this is intentional. GNOME Shell will not run if the GDM libraries are not installed. I looked at splitting the libraries from GDM itself but that didn't seem possible.

Also, note that if you don't used GDM with the latest GNOME Shell (and instead continue to use LightDM), you won't be able to password-lock your screen. You can activate the screen lock/screensaver but it won't be password-protected. I believe Switch User won't do anything either. That issue is being tracked in bug 1042907.
