Bug Description

Using 17.10 daily. Installed Dash To Dock to test settings compatibility etc... Finished testing. Uninstalled Dash To Dock. Expected Ubuntu Dock to reappear. It did not, even after a shell restart and log out/in. I was able to get it back by reinstalling and disabling Dash To Dock. Ubuntu Dock folder still exists in the system extension folder, but it's desktop appearance seems now permanently dependent on Dash To Dock's installation.

That's an user configuration issue, not really an ubuntu bug

This bug was fixed in the package gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock - 0.5

---------------
gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock (0.5) artful; urgency=medium

  * Cherry-pick dynamic and adaptive transparency feature to look and behave
    better with GNOME Shell 3.26. We only enable adaptive transparency.
    (LP: #1717509).
  * Rationalize some keyboard and key + mouse shortcuts:
    - Click is focus or showing up window previews. Same than Super + number
      (was already the default)
    - Shift + click launch a new instance. Same than Super + Shift + number
    - Middle click launch a new instance as well. This is to be consistent
      when middle clicking a link in a web browser opening a new tab.
    - Shift + middle click minimize the last focused window from the selected
      application.
  * Cherry-pick some fixes from dash to dock branch (without taking the other
    new features):
    - Hotkeys: remove keypad hotkeys
    - Define externally accessible classes and constants with 'var'
  * Fix uninitialized value for dock disabled by default
    (LP: #1712698, #1714219)
  * updated translations
  * Remove prefs.js as deleted from to localize list
  * Add Vcs-Git reference

  [ Sebastien Bacher ]
  * debian/control, debian/rules:
    - use dh_translations, update the template during the build

Problem still persists. Dash to Dock overwrite the database and gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock - 0.5 do not repair database that earlier Versions of 0.5 permitted to change. In doing editor y have still the extension installed on Gnome Sbell, but Dash to Dock is eliminated and killed from .locale ... gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock - 0.5+ had to repair database on installing. This may be the best solution.

If we failed to really fix this bug there's no need to reopen it... I think bug 1711617 might cover the same issue and root cause still.

I fixed the bug typing "dconf reset -f /" (without the quotes) in the terminal. More details here: http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2017/10/how-to-reset-ubuntu-desktop-to-default.

I don't know why this bug is marked as fixed, because it has just happened to me.
Ubuntu 18.04
Gnome 3.28.2

The workaround mentioned, to reset the entire dconf settings, is not a good idea for me, having made a number of personalisations there.
