I set-up the proxy config via system-configuration->network->proxy
But if I leave the option "use system settings" in firefox or thunderbird they do not detect the system settings
In 11.04 it worked just fine

Yes , I can confirm. But fortunatly proxy settings specified in firefox option DO work. On the other hand, proxy settings specified in general settings DON'T and chromium won't connect thru a proxy.

Since this bug affects a variety of programs, (Pidgin, Firefox, and Thunderbid), it would seem to be a problem with Ubuntu's implementation of system wide proxy settings, not the individual programs.

Bug #877088 seems to describe the root problem, however I don't know enough about the affected systems to say that with any certainty.
