Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Is the issue reproducible with gnome-settings-daemon 3.1.90 or newer? There's no recent comments on this report indicating that, could you please test and comment back?. Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

Yes, with 3.1.90-0ubuntu3, the same thing happens - actually, gnome-settings-daemon doesn't crash now, but the icons on the desktop are all just empty sheets of paper (enclosed is what a folder looks like). I assume it's theme related, since the context menu that opens when right-clicking on the desktop reverts to a default ugly grey and the icons are wrong there as well.

Maybe this error (from dmesg) is related?

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy. Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.
