I have removed indicator-power and gnome-power-manager and still have one icon displayed. This, as poster #9 says, doesn't do anything on mouse click but displays battery status on hovering over it. This, by the way, was on a clean Oneiric install on VirtualBox and not an upgrade from 11.04.
