Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

Description: Ubuntu maverick (development branch)
Release: 10.10

Regular boot via gdm. At end of desktop start-up graphics change to 1970s-style X

.xsession-errors ends:

Gdk-ERROR **: The program 'gnome-settings-daemon' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.
  (Details: serial 2019 error_code 8 request_code 3 minor_code 0)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
aborting...

This doesn't always occur. It's random. But requiring a reboot to rectify, it's a show-stopper.

This happens to me when I change the monitor setup using the NVidia settings application.

Also on 10.10

The X error message comes a little while after the error, so can you please paste the whole .xsession-errors?

I have this problem too (bug 696455 now it's a duplicate of this bug) but I often meet this one not only at session start, but even randomly sometimes. It's quite frequent issue for me, if I kill indicator applet by the way (just I noticed it can trigger this problem more frequently, I got this otherwise too!). Starting gnome-appearance-properties "fixes" the problem, because it restarts gnome-settings-daemon (afaik). In .xession-errors

In kernel log:

[1206298.610775] gnome-settings-[2102]: segfault at 535f4d57 ip 00bc5f4b sp bfbd90a0 error 4 in libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0.2200.0[ad1000+3c8000]

I have this problem in three different machines, one of them is fresh install, the others are upgraded since several ubuntu releases.

the segfault and the XError are likely different issue, crashes when killing the indicator applet are an another bug in the indicator stack which is being worked

This also happens to me, but not at startup and I don't have an NVidia card. It seems like it might happen when I come out of suspend, but not consistently. Instructions on what details could make this report more useful to developers welcome!
