Keyboard menu missing from the panel

gnome-settings-daemon 2.30.2-0ubuntu5, Ubuntu Maverick

I have multiple keyboard layouts selected in "System" > "Preferences" > "Keyboard" > "Layouts", but the keyboard menu does not show up in the panel.

It doesn't show up when I add more layouts, nor when I remove existing layouts.

Please let me know what information I can provide to make this problem reproducible.

Check your gconf key for; /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/general/disable_indicator

That's the only reason I see for it not being visible.

I'm assuming it's functional, as in you can switch layouts?

/desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/general/ does not contain a disable_indicator key. It does contain a "handleIndicators" key that is set to false, but setting it to true does not seem to make any difference.

I see an icon that looks like a little keyboard, but it doesn't indicate the current keyboard layout any longer (via an abbreviation like "USA" or "Rus") the way it used to. I can do a left-click on the icon and get a list of radio buttons allowing me to see/change the layout, but nothing shows the layout automatically. This, in my view, is a serious regression from Lucid to Maverick.
