media keys don't work for several minutes

Bug Description
When I log into Ubuntu, none of my media keys (volume up, down, mute, play/pause, previous, next) work immediately. Instead, they seem to buffer up, and after a few minutes they all trigger at once. Sometimes this buffering behavior occurrs at random later times too.
I'm on Ubuntu 14.10.
