any idea how to fix this bug?
I am having the exact same issue. I have tried everything i could imagine, but it still there. I had to unistall unity because ofthis bug and install and use mate-desktop.

I have same issue while upgrading to 14.04 from 13.10. I have tried almost everything but unable to get back my GUI. Can anyone tell me temporary solution until this bug is fixed.

@hemant: have you try unity --reinstall command in CLI?? I had the same issue, and I got from somwhere this command, and it worked. though unity interface wasnt the usual one.

@gheorghe
Thanks. But I says no such option :(
BTW, how did you manage to install mate-desktop. I cannot install any package now due to this conflict of package.

You have to uninstall whole unity and the dependent packages who create the bug. For that open synaptic and uninstall these packages (you will find them under broken packages section).

and install mate from repositories (I used the ppa from their official website).

Unfortunately I don't have synaptic installed and I can't install it now. I have tried "dpkg --configure -a" and "apt-get install -f"
I am always stuck with this error-
"Preparing to unpack .../gnome-settings-daemon-schemas_3.8.6.1-0ubuntu10_all.deb ...
Unpacking gnome-settings-daemon-schemas (3.8.6.1-0ubuntu10) ...

Hey guys, this bug is affecting me too. My upgrade failed. I cant install aptitude to try and rescue. Is there an older version of this deb that i can install to rescue?

if you dont have synaptic or aptitude will be very hard to do smth.

I can suggest you to download the .deb package for synaptic or aptitude and to try to install them manually. maybe it will work.
Or if not you will have two ways: One solution will be to reinstall the system. or to wait till the bug is fixed.

Same issue here. I've tried the aptitude way, which I originally thought as working... but later on in the install the bug remanifested itself. I have a root-mode ubuntu trusty in the meantime. It seems the last package that blocks (in a severe way) the dist-upgrade to trusty.

I found a workaround. For each ~saucy package which conflicts, invoke:

dpkg -P ...the.package.name...

And the retry the apt-get install which previously failed.

I tried
sudo aptitude install gnome-settings-daemon

and it worked for me.
It uninstalled gnome-compiz and when I executed the same command a second time everything worked.
Now apt-get upgrade is working again.

This error is produced because before the installation you didn't removed the gnome ppa along with the packages. This is evident since those package gnome-settings-daemon 3.10.2-0ubuntu1~saucy6 is not present in saucy repositories, but in gnome PPA's. You can try removing one by one using dpkg all those packages ending in saucy, remove all the PPA repositories and use aptitude remove '?version(*saucy*)' if you have it installed, or reinstall your system.

For those who don't have aptitude or ppa-purge, the problem can be solved (in a dirty way) by downloading the .deb package and installing it through the command: dpkg --force-overwrite -i <package_name>.
Removing gnome PPA had no effects for me, because they were already automatically disabled through the do-release-upgrade command.
The suggested command will enable you to use apt-get again, but can be harmful to your system. So use it at your own risk.

Thanks to caspar luc's advise my system is now back to normal.

Got the package from here: http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/gnome/gnome-settings-daemon-schemas
and installed it using: "dpkg --force-overwrite -i gnome-settings-daemon-schemas_3.8.6.1-0ubuntu11_all.deb"

After a few upgrades and dist-upgrades I had a smooth running Ubuntu GNOME 14.04.

I tried to remove unity, gnome compiz etc. to no avail. Aptitude's solution was to remove gdm, gnome-shell etc. which was not what I wanted to do. Synaptic was unable to fix things.
