Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome

hi,

after a ubdate from ubuntu edgy to the latest (edgy) version, i could not login into gnome. i also created a new user which could also not login.

After entering username and password in gdm, it tries to start gnome. But i can only see a blank screen with a gray box in the upper left corner. Nothing more.

I have the same issue after installing ubuntu from the live cd.

I can start fluxbox. But i can not start a gnome application inside of fluxbox. The applications will always hang....

how can i help you with more information?

best regards,
daniel

ok the problem was that the loopback device was not started. I think this bug has a high priority. If anybody switched of the loopback by clicking in the network manager and then he reboot the pc, he can not login anymore. There should occour a message with the text please activate you loopback device or so. I need two days to find the error....!

best regards,
daniel

also if i start a gnome (gtk) application from a other desktop environment there should be a message that says that i need a loopback device if is not activated.

best regards,
daniel

That's a duplicate from bug #26419, having a dialog indicating the problem would be nice indeed
