I was testing it again with a prepaid mobile Internet USB stick. I went to suspend and disconnected the stick, while the netbook was sleeping. Before resume I connected the stick again. With the results:
resume after 1 minute was working fine
resume after 10 minutes was working fine
resume after 30 minutes failed
may be that the problem is the time of resume instead of the USB stick. I was working with the netbook and resume failed sometimes after long sleep (30 - 60 minutes and longer).

I was suspending to RAM without USB stick. The netbook slept 30 minutes and resumed fine. I try to find what makes resume fail.

Today I ran 6 time suspend and resume with and without USB stick (with 30 - 60 minutes sleep) while I was working and it always ran fine. I don't know why it sometimes failed the last days. May be the last update fixed the issue.
When suspend and resume fails again I will write it down here.

Yesterday I ran 4 times suspend to RAM and resume failed 2 times.
Today I used 3 times suspend to RAM. Resume worked 2 times fine and failed one time.
I can't find a pattern. I can't say under which circumstances the issue can be reproduced.

I don't know whether anybody will read what I am writing.
There is always an error message which appears before suspend and resume. I could not read it because it disappeared quickly.
Yesterday suspend/resume worked three times fine. The fourth time the netbook was frozen right after the error message appeared. So I could write it on a paper and I will post it here:

425.7024331 ath: DMA failed to stop in 10 ms AR_CR=Oxdeadbeef AR_DIAG_SW=Oxdeadbeef
425.7024391 ath: Could not stop RX, we could be confusing the DMA engine when we start RXup

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the stable release - Oneiric Ocelot. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

I have tested the live-CD.
First of all: I have tested many live-CD of different distributions, but suspend to RAM worked never properly from the live environment.
I started the live CD and suspended to RAM with the keys Fn + F3. The first time resume worked fine.
At the second try resume failed in the usual manner: The green led (usually for the hard disk) blinked on time shortly. The orange led for the WLAN started to shine a little bit later. Then the system hang.
The issue appears between the first and the second blink of the green led (hard disk). When the green led blinks twice resume works always fine.
Restart on battery works fine. On AC I can reproduce the issue as often as I want. I push the Start button, the green led blinks shortly the orange led begins to shine and the system hangs. I have to disconnect the netbook from power and connect again. Then I can restart.
I would be surprised if you get resume working 100 % stable. I tried many scripts and settings. Sometimes I managed to reduce the failure rate to 10 %, but never to 0 %.
