Bug #165065 reported by Rafael Belmonte on 2007-11-25

gnome-session (Ubuntu)

Bug Description

Ubuntu (with Gnome) should be able to reboot directly into other Operating System listed in grub, like Kubuntu with KDE can do.
See the screenshot to know what i am talking about.

<https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SessionHandling#Restart>: "A 'Restart Into Windows' or 'Restart Into OS X' button should be present only if the relevant system is installed and can be restarted into."

I like this idea.Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at [WWW] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this bug as a bug in gnome-session.

I don't really know how to determine the exact package, i think the improvement must be done in the logout screen.

That's a known request and listed on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DesktopTeam/Specs/ExitStrategy

This would be very convenient for dual-booters. It could be fixed by bootnext script (Bug 304215), but I don't know how to make that script integrate well with Ubuntu, and it would really be best if the feature were built right into Gnome.

The best way to do this is to have PolicyKit hadle the permissions issue (grub-reboot can only be run as root).

I filed a bug with grub to ship a PolicyKit action file to describe the action.

I'll do a design for this, but don't let that stop anyone from contributing the basic code in the meantime. It should cater both for dual-booting installations (changing the Grub config temporarily) and Wubi installations (changing the NT bootloader config temporarily).

Ubuntu Light had a "Restart Into Windows" button. Unfortunately I don't know where that code is.
