Bug Description

When I go to the session menu -> Shutdown, or run gnome-session-quit --power-off, the dialog that appears does nothing. If I click the shutdown or restart button, the dialog closes but does nothing, the PC doesn't shutdown or restart.
I have this problem from Ubuntu 13.10, I updated to 14.04 and the problem remains.

Thank you for your bug report. Do you have the same issue in a guest session or with other accounts? Can you add your user .cache/upstart/gnome-session-Ubuntu.log to the bug (try to log out first and then copy the log)

I tested in a guest session and I have the same issue.
I don't have that file, I have gnome-session-Unity.log. When I click the restart or shutdown button in the dialog, this content gets added to the log:

error : string is not in UTF-8
encoding error : output conversion failed due to conv error, bytes 0xB4 0x67 0x6E 0x6F
I/O error : encoder error

Each time I start a new session, the "bytes" content is different.

does it work better if you change your language to english?

Well... I can't change the system language :S. In the gnome-language-selector, when I drag English first, the app crashes... Is there another method to change the system language?

did you report that issue? You could edit ~/.pam_environment or /etc/default/locale

No, I haven't reported it yet.

And no, with my system in english, it still doesn't work, the shutdown and restart buttons do anything. But now no content is added to the log (gnome-session-Unity.log).

How can I debug gnome-session-quit?

Sebastien Bacher (seb128) wrote :

you could try to edit /usr/share/upstart/sessions/gnome-session.conf to add --debug to the "exec gnome-session ..." line, then reproduce the bug, then look at .cache/upstart/gnome-session-Ubuntu.log

I am using Utopic Unicorn dev. branch and see the same problem. My display manager is lightdm and I use gnome-shell as window manager.
