Bug Description

Sometimes, after taking a screenshot, when you click to close the gnome-screenshot window, it fails to close and remains open, but in the background, behind everything else.

What is much worse, is that the icon in launcher does disappear. So, you have a "ghost" window left open, behind every other window, that you have NO WAY TO REACH except by minimizing or closing EVERY SINGLE other window one by one, until the only one that remains is screengrab.

This makes bug 1526082 even more annoying, as sometimes, even after you (think you) have closed all screengrab's windows, there is still a rectanguar area of the screen that is slightly dimmed. The first time it happened to me, I thought bug 1526082 had got worse and that the screengrabbed area would now remain dimmed forever even after closing screengrab. But then I found out the window was still there.

This is fucking pathetic. Please drop Gnome for good and pick an alternative that is decently maintained, by non-idiots.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.

You tagged `screengrab` which is used by Lubuntu's LXDE desktop. However Lubuntu 16.04 LTS is now EOL/end-of-life, as being a flavor it had only three years of supported life.

This package as such won't be fixed, however I also wonder if you've tagged the wrong package, as the Ubuntu desktop (Unity or https://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/ubuntu-desktop) used `gnome-screenshot` (https://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/gnome-screenshot) which still is a supported package.

I'll mark this bug as incomplete, as it's marked against an unsupported package, if however you believe I'm in error (or intended to mark it against gnome-screenshot), feel free to leave comment, change package and then return the status (near top of page) to "New".

Changed in screengrab (Ubuntu):
status: New → Incomplete

I guess I marked the wrong package, as Ubuntu doesn't provide any easy mechanism for the end user to figure out which fucking package a given application belongs to, so one has to guess.

I am using standard Ubuntu 16.04, not Lubuntu, and this is about the default screenshot grabber that appears as "Screenshot" and that is launched by pressing the PrintScreen key.

I think the executable is /usr/bin/gnome-screenshot

affects: screengrab (Ubuntu) → gnome-screenshot (Ubuntu)

the issue there would be a gnome-screenshot one. Do you click on the dialog button on the decoration X ?

the launcher not listing it would be an unity problem

Sometimes that, sometimes I hit the Esc key.

Actually I cannot tell with 100% certainty that the window fails to close when I do so. It may be that I failed/forgot to close it, and that the real issue is the launcher not listing it.

However, this only happens to me when I take several screenshots (not many, because of bug 1526082), and accumulate a few gnome-screenshot windows open, and then go to close them all.

I never, ever observed taking a single screenshot and the launcher icon not appearing since the beginning. Nor taking a single screenshot, then attempting to close the single window and observing the issue.
It's only when I have a few open and finally close them all, that after closing what seems to be the last one, there's one more left with no launcher icon (just to clarify: not always, only very rarely). So it's like the count of open windows gets the wrong value at some point, either when opening a new instance or when closing one.

I don't think I've ever observed this with other applications, though that might be because gnome-screenshot is the only one of which I so often open a few instances. The only other two I can think of are the terminal and nautilus, and I don't think I've observed this with those. Might be just statistics.
